Mobile Phones in School

Mobile Phones in School

New Department for Education (DfE) guidance and legislation in England made mobile phone restrictions statutory (legally required) for all state-funded schools starting 1 September 2026.

Key Changes to School Phone Rules

Phone-free by default: Schools must operate as mobile phone-free environments throughout the entire school day—including lessons, break times, lunchtimes, and between classes.

Included devices: The ban applies to smartphones and related smart technology, such as smartwatches or any device capable of sending messages or recording audio and video.

Enforcement methods: Schools decide their own practical approach, which typically involves collection at the start of the day, safe storage in the school office.

Exceptions
Medical and special needs: Reasonable adjustments remain in place for students with specific medical conditions (such as diabetes), disabilities under the Equality Act 2010, or young carer responsibilities.
