Modern Foreign Languages

At St Mary's Academy we teach French as our chosen Modern Foreign Language. The aim of the Modern Foreign language curriculum is for children to develop a passion for learning languages. We believe that all children have the right to a rich and deep learning experience which includes the learning of an additional language. Having a good level of conversational language provides an opening to other cultures and access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures across our school and the wider demographic. To have the confidence to communicate with others in a specific language other than their own increases a child's understanding of their own language and the building blocks which form this. We believe it will increase their interested in the actual history, culture and food of the language they are learning. We have links to France via a Pen Pal exchange so they can get to know children from another culture.
