PE
Our PE days are
Children need to bring to school their full outdoor kit on these days, and for health and safety reasons, they should have their long hair tied and earrings removed. The kit should include:
- Sweatshirt or zipped jacket
- Jogging trousers or leggings
- Trainers or pumps
- A T-shirt and shorts can be worn on warmer days.
Homework
Below are some key skills you can work on to support your child throughout Year 2. We will send home weekly homework each Friday in your child’s homework bag. Please return homework in this bag each Wednesday to show your child's success.
Reading regularly will develop a love of books and your child’s skills as a reader. We recommend reading at least three times each week. Each day you indicate in their diary that your child has read, this means they collect raffle tickets to be in with a chance to win a book from school.
Maths homework will be sent home every week. This will often reinforce a skill that has been taught previously.
Times Tables
We will also continue to develop children's fluency with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Children will be encouraged to recall facts quickly and use their knowledge to solve multiplication and division problems.
A few minutes of practice each day can make a huge difference. Please continue to practise these facts regularly at home alongside spelling.
Spelling Rules
A SPaG activity and spellings will be sent home each week for children to reinforce their SPaG objectives and spellings from the week.
As the children move into Year 2, we will be placing an increased focus on learning and applying spelling rules and patterns. Developing a strong understanding of spelling rules will help children to become more confident writers and, importantly, help them to spell unfamiliar words independently.
Throughout Year 2, children will be taught a range of spelling rules and patterns, including:
Adding -ing, -ed, -er and -est to words.
Knowing when to double the final consonant when adding a suffix.
Understanding when to drop the final 'e' before adding a suffix.
Changing 'y' to 'i' when adding certain suffixes.
Learning common spelling patterns and alternative ways of spelling sounds.
Spelling words with common prefixes and suffixes.
Learning and applying common exception words.
We want children to understand why a word is spelt in a particular way, rather than simply memorising a weekly list. When practising at home, please encourage your child to explain the rule they are using. For example, rather than simply asking them to spell hopping, ask: “Why do we double the 'p'?”
Regular, short practice sessions are most effective. Revisiting previously taught rules will also help children to retain their knowledge and apply it in their independent writing.

Year 2 have been working hard writing non-chronological reports all about owls! The children researched fascinating facts about where owls live and what they eat, using books, websites, and other resources to gather their information
This week in science, we explored how materials can change shape!
Year 2 worked hard exploring how we can prevent germs by washing out hands. We learnt how keeping clean is part of a healthy lifestyle.
