Year 5

Introduction

Mrs Mellow and Miss Monaghan are thrilled to welcome you to Year 5, a dynamic and engaging class where curiosity meets creativity! This year, our students will embark on a range of exciting projects that ignite their imaginations and enhance their learning experiences.

Here's a glimpse of what we will be exploring:

Mummifying Oranges: Delve into ancient Egyptian practices as we learn the art of mummification.

Creating Egyptian Tombs: Students will design and construct their own tombs, filled with historical treasures.

Writing Fairytales: Each student will star in their own fairytale, unleashing their storytelling talents.

Building Toys for EYFS: Using cogs and gears, we'll create delightful toys to gift to our younger peers at Christmas.

Mapping School Trips: Students will plan and map out an exciting trip to visit famous landmarks in Sheffield City Centre, utilizing OS maps and grid references.

Visiting Tudor Ruins: We will explore the local Manor Lodge Castle, gaining hands-on insights into our rich heritage.

Scaling the Solar System: We will create a scaled model of the solar system, learning about our universe in an interactive way.

Participating in an EXPLOSIVE Workshop: At Magna Science Centre, we will engage in an interactive workshop focusing on forces.

Sculpting with Artists: Collaborating with local artists, students will create stunning sculptures at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Painting Inspired by David Hockney: Students will create beautiful paintings inspired by this renowned artist to be displayed at our school gallery event.

These are just some of the thrilling activities that await our Year 5 students this year! We look forward to a year filled with learning, creativity, and unforgettable experiences. Stay tuned for updates on our adventures!

Learning Highlights!

In Autumn 1, the Y5 children mummified oranges using Natron (salt from the banks of the River Nile) and created these wonderful Egyptian tombs.

In Autumn 2, the children created toys using cogs and gears. This unit required the children to measure, saw and sand a wooden frame before painting on their design carefully. They then added on wooden cogs in order to create working gears. The EYFS children absolutely loved their designs and some of them even wanted to take them home with them!
